Know the rug before cleaning it
Synthetic rugs usually handle a thorough on-site clean. Wool needs gentler treatment. Handmade, silk, viscose and some natural-fibre rugs can shrink, bleed dye or distort with the wrong method.
The fibre, backing and dyes are checked before any cleaning. If your rug is better suited to specialist off-site washing, you will hear that straight away rather than finding out afterwards.
What the clean includes
A standard on-site rug clean covers the following.
- Fibre, dye and backing check
- Dry soil removal first, so grit is not turned into mud
- Spot treatment on visible marks
- Cleaning matched to the fibre
- Fringe attention where the rug has one
- Drying advice so the rug and floor underneath stay protected
Coastal and sandy homes
Homes close to the water tend to collect fine sand in rugs near doors and living areas. It works down into the base of the pile and wears the fibres over time. Dry soil removal before the wet clean makes a big difference for these rugs.
